Its last assignment waa with the Eighth Air Force, based at Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota. It was inactivated on on 31 July 1990. Established as the 12th Pursuit Wing in the Panama Canal Zone 20 November 1940–6 March 1942 the organization provided command and control of pursuit groups and squadrons for Sixth Air Force.
