The second tropical cyclone of the season struck the Florida Keys in southern Florida as a Category 5 hurricane; it remains the strongest landfalling hurricane in the United States (and anywhere in the Atlantic basin). A rare November hurricane also affected the Miami—Fort Lauderdale area.
