High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The 1948 Australian Grand Prix was a motor race held on the runways and service roads of the Royal Australian Air Force base at Point Cook just outside of Melbourne in Victoria on Australia Day. The race was held over 42 laps of a 3.85 kilometre circuit for a race distance of 162 kilometres. It was the thirteenth Australian Grand Prix and the first time the race was not held on public roads. Prominent motorcycle racer Frank Pratt won the handicap race driving a BMW sports car. Alf Najar finished second driving a stripped down MG with Dick Bland third driving a George Reed constructed Ford V8 special. Bland also completed the 42 laps in the fastest elapsed time, but unlike later handicap races was not officially recognised in any way.
