Peter May led the England cricket team on a tour of Australia in the 1958-59 season and played a five-match Test series against Australia for The Ashes. Each Test consisted of six days, with five hours play; eight ball overs were used. The tour was organised by the Marylebone Cricket Club and matches outside the Tests were played under the MCC name. The England team had the formidable bowling attack of Frank Tyson (18.56), Fred Trueman (21.57), Brian Statham (24.84), Peter Loader (22.51), Jim Laker (21.24), Tony Lock (25.52), and the all-rounder Trevor Bailey (bowling average 29.21), the outstanding wicket-keeper Godfrey Evans and the batting of Peter May (46.77), Colin Cowdrey (44.06), Tom Graveney (44.38) and Raman Subba Row (46.85), later joined by Ted Dexter (47.89). (The bracketed figures are the players' averages at the conclusion of their Test careers.) They had won the last three Ashes series in 1953, 1954-55 and 1956, and were labelled the strongest team ever to leave England, but lost the series and The Ashes to Australia 4-0.
