High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The 1989 German Grand Prix was a Formula One race held at Hockenheimring on July 30, 1989. The race was highlighted by Gerhard Berger's spectacular accident at the Jim Clark chicane. In the pre- qualifying session, Larrousse driver Michele Alboreto beat AGS driver Yannick Dalmas by mere 0.001 second for the last berth in the qualifying sessions. The race started with Ayrton Senna on pole position with Alain Prost alongside him, and at the start, Gerhard Berger had a tremendous start from 3rd, passing both Senna and Prost, leading the entire field into the first corner with Senna, Prost and Berger's teammate Nigel Mansell following in succession. Philippe Alliot went off the track at the start in spectacular fashion as he lost control of his Larrousse and spun off into the grass.
