High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The 1990 French Grand Prix was a Formula One race held at Paul Ricard on July 8, 1990. Nigel Mansell took pole position from Gerhard Berger and Ayrton Senna being followed by Alain Prost, Nannini 5th, Patrese 6th, Capelli 7th followed by Boutsen in 8th, Piquet in 9th and Gugelmin 10th. In one of the most remarkable turn arounds in Grand Prix history the Leyton House cars ran first and second for much of the race. Neither car had qualified in Mexico. Gugelmin stopped from 2nd late on whilst Ivan Capelli led until 3 laps from home when his engine encountered problems to finish 2nd. Berger took the lead at the start followed by Mansell, Senna, Nannini, Patrese, Prost, Boutsen, Piquet and Alesi. Later in the race when the leaders pitted, Capelli took the lead being followed by team mate Gugelmin. Prost overtook Gugelmin on lap 54 and Gugelmin's engine blew on lap 57. Prost overtook Capelli for the lead on lap 77 of 80 and went on to win in front of his home crowd at the last event provisionally at Paul Ricard before the French GP moved to Magny- Cours.
