Among the 54 picks, Gary Payton is considered by far the best pick of the draft. Payton went on to become one of the greatest Point Guard's of all time. He became a nine-time All-Star, achieved the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award in 1996, won NBA Championship with the Miami Heat in 2006 and holds many statistical records during his tenure with the now defunct Seattle SuperSonics. The player projected to be the top pick by many media outlets and draft analysts was Loyola Marymount's Hank Gathers. Gathers died of a heart attack while playing in the West Coast Conference semifinal game on March 4, 1990.
