High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The 2001–02 New Jersey Devils season was the team's 20th season in the National Hockey League since the franchise relocated to New Jersey. The Devils finished 6th in the Eastern Conference and were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. On October 6, 2001, in the team's first game of the season against the Washington Capitals, the Devils scored the first goal of the game to lead 1-0, hoping to win. However, later in the period, Washington's Jeff Halpern scored to tie 1-1. In the Second Period, Washington's Calle Johansson, Jaromir Jagr, Sergei Gonchar and Ulf Dahlen all scored as New Jersey's Martin Brodeur gave up those goals before handing the net to Scott Clemensen. Clemmensen made 4 saves in giving up 1 goal for a 6-1 win for the Capitals. 51 games in, head coach Larry Robinson was fired and Kevin Constantine was named their head coach for their final 31 games.
