The season was the second-most active in 30 years, in which 9 storms developed into tropical cyclones, or the equivalent of a minimal hurricane. Many storms formed in the north-east portion of the basin, and several storms either formed or had its origins in the Australian region. The dividing line between the basins is 90°E and south of the equator. The eleven tropical storms that formed were slightly above normal, although most became stronger. Tropical systems were present during 73 days, which was significantly higher than the average of 58.
