They were the 73rd Japan Championships to be held. They were held at the Shinyokohama Stake Center in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture from December 24 through 26, 2004. The competition was used to decide Japan`s entries to the 2005 World Figure Skating Championships and the 2005 Four Continents Figure Skating Championships. The entries to the 2005 World Junior Figure Skating Championships were decided at the Japanese Junior Championships.
