High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The 2005 Grand National Steeplechase, sponsored by John Smiths was the one hundred and fifty-eighth official annual running of a Handicap Steeple-chase Horse race which took place at Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool on Saturday 9 April 2005 and attracted the maximum allowed field of forty competitors for total prize money of 700,000 including 406,000 to the winner. The nine year old 7-1 favourite Hedgehunter, ridden by Ruby Walsh and trained by Willie Mullins in Carlow, Ireland, won the race by 14 lengths, in a time of 9 minutes and 21 seconds. The race was moved back twenty-five minutes in order to avoid clashing with the wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles. Over half the field completed the course and all the horses returned safely, although Frenchman's Creek was retired after the race. There was much media interest in the rider of Forest Gunner, Carrie Ford, who was considered the first genuine opportunity a woman had been given to win the race. The pair were sent off as second favourite but finished fifth.
