It was held in Rwanda from the 18th of January until the 1st of February 2009. The competition consisted of three rounds of two legged matches. Some countries have a bye to the First Round. The winners of the Second Round matches qualified for the Finals in Rwanda. The CAF African Youth Championship (sometimes referred to as the CAF U20 African Championship) is the main international football competition for CAF nations, played by under 20 years old players. It is held every two years with the top 4 teams qualifying for the FIFA World Youth Championship. Until 1989 the African representatives were determined purely on a qualifying basis with no African title on the line. Since 1991 there has been a qualifying stage followed by a final tournament played by 8 teams in a chosen country.
