After missing the post-season in 2008–09 for the first time since the 1995-96 season, the team qualified for the playoffs with four games to play with a win against the Carolina Hurricanes on April 1, 2010. The Senators drew the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round and lost the series 4–2.
