The 384 AEG may be activated or inactivated at any time. It was last active in 2003, being stationed at RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus. During World War II, its predecessor unit, the 401st Bombardment Group was a VIII Bomber Command B-17 Flying Fortress unit in England. Assigned to RAF Deenethorpe in late 1943, the group earned two Distinguished Unit Citations for missions over Leipzig on 11 January and 20 February 1944. The 401st Bomb Group was the second best rating in bombing accuracy for Eighth Air Force.
