The 49th Flying Training Squadron (49 FTS) is part of the 14th Flying Training Wing based at Columbus Air Force Base, Mississippi. It operates T-38 Talon aircraft conducting flight training. The 49th flew air defense patrols from, 7–12 December 1941. It went on to fly combat missions in the European Theater of Operations and Mediterranean Theater of Operations from, 21 October 1942-1 May 1945. The squadron again conducted air defense from, 1947–1949, and 1952-1987. It performed undergraduate pilot training from, 1990–1992 and has taught basic procedures and techniques of fighter employment since 1993.
