Women are typically underrepresented in government. This is particularly evident in the United States where women are far less likely than men to serve in elected office and have never served as president. This book looks at the women who ran for their party's nomination for president from Margaret Chase Smith through Carol Moseley Braun. It examines the challenges and barriers faced by women running for political office, as well as the unique challenges faced by women who run for president. A model is then created that examines the personal and political similarities and differences between these women. This model is compared and contrasted to previously existing models of the personal and political characteristics of the male United States presidents. Ultimately, this book tries to explain the main factors leading to the lack of success experienced by women candidates in obtaining their party's nomination for the U.S. presidency. This analysis should be helpful to professionals in the field of political science and gender studies, as well as anyone else trying to understand why a woman has not yet been elected president in the United States.
