Abell 2256 has an angular size of 35'±15', at 2800 kpc. Abell 2256 was detected by the X-ray observatory satellite Uhuru at 3U 1706+78, where 3U indicates the third Uhuru catalog of X-ray sources in equatorial coordinates for the year 1950 at right ascension (RA) 17h 06m declination (Dec) +78°, and 4U 1707+78 is the entry in the fourth Uhuru catalog. A2256 was also detected by Ariel 5 at 2A 1705+786.
