Launched in September 2008, it became one of the largest social networking sites for academics in 2010. It has been called a "Geni-portal for researchers". Though the site bears a ".edu" domain, it does not qualify for this status under Educause's existing policies allowing only "U.S. postsecondary institutions that are institutionally accredited by an agency on the U.S. Department of Education's list of Nationally Recognized Accrediting Agencies.
