Acheilognathus barbatulus is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish in the genus Acheilognathus. It is endemic to the Mekong river in Laos, northern Vietnam and southern China in waters between 8-20 °C and its maximum length is 8.4cm. Acheilognathus is a genus of cyprinid fish, consisting of several species. The type species is the Capoeta rhombea. The name is derived from the Greek a, meaning "without", the Greek cheilos, meaning "lip", and the Greek gnathos, meaning "jaw". Fishes of this genus have length from 5 to 27 cm. They are small and the shape is likely to the fishes of genus Puntius.
