Acheilognathus barbatus is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish in the genus Acheilognathus. It is endemic to the Mingjiang and Yangtze rivers in China. It's common length is 4.0 cm. Acheilognathus is a genus of cyprinid fish, consisting of several species. The type species is the Capoeta rhombea. The name is derived from the Greek a, meaning "without", the Greek cheilos, meaning "lip", and the Greek gnathos, meaning "jaw". Fishes of this genus have length from 5 to 27 cm. They are small and the shape is likely to the fishes of genus Puntius. Acheilognathus rhombeus is a temperate freshwater fish belonging to the Acheilognathinae sub-family of the Cyprinidae family. It originates in Japan and the Korean Peninsula. It was originally described as Capoeta rhombea by Temminck
