Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. ACOS is a compiled language for the ProDOS 8 operating system on the Apple II computer. Originally written by Greg Schaffer, ACOS short for "A Communications Operating System" was created as the underlying operating system for GBBS and GBBS Pro. ACOS was a tokenizing "compiler" in that it generated an interpreted code that would execute quickly. It used an indexed, fixed length block file for handling message storage. Compile time depended on the size of the text source code file. A typical 128k source would compile in approximately 2 minutes.
