The Window Acraea (Acraea oncaea) is a butterfly of the Nymphalidae family. It is found in KwaZulu-Natal, Transvaal, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, from eastern Africa to Abyssinia and in Congo. The wingspan is 40-48 mm for males and 43-55 mm for females. Adults are on wing year round, with a peak from September to May. There are multiple generations per year. The larvae feed on Xylotheca kraussiana, Tricicleras longepedunculata and Passifloraceae species, including Adenia species. The Nymphalidae is a family of about 5,000 species of butterflies which are distributed throughout most of the world. These are usually medium sized to large butterflies. Most species have a reduced pair of forelegs and many hold their colourful wings flat when resting. They are also called brush-footed butterflies or four-footed butterflies. Many species are brightly colored and include popular species such as the emperor, admirals, tortoiseshells and fritillaries.
