At the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco 2007, investment bank Morgan Stanley stated that United States businesses spend 50% of their capital expenditure on information technology. Given such a massive investment, the performance of the US economy depends very heavily on the extent to which US businesses and their workers use these investments in information technology wisely. This book is driven by a question that is often asked by organizations: what can we do to maximize the benefits of IT? This research approaches this question from a human agency perspective: IT does not determine its own trajectory of development and use. It is users who create and innovate its evolution. This book investigates how individual users modify their use of information systems adaptively over time to respond to external and internal triggers, within certain constrains. A new concept named adaptive IT use was developed. A model of adaptive IT use that depicts and explains the scenario of user modifications to their use of information systems was developed systematically. The research has significant implications for both research and practices in system development and implementation.
