The Afshar experiment is an optical experiment which investigates the principle of complementarity in quantum mechanics. The result of the experiment, which was first devised and carried out by Shahriar Afshar in 2001, is in accordance with the standard predictions of quantum mechanics; however, it is controversially claimed to violate complementarity and specifically the Englert-Greenberger duality relation; others disagree, while opposing each other on their reasoning. Afshar's experiment uses a variant of the classic Thomas Young double-slit experiment to create interference patterns to investigate complementarity.
