Martin was a Scotland under-21 international, and viewed as a bright prospect for the future. However, he subsequently struggled to establish himself as a first-team regular in a full-time professional team, playing on loan from Leeds United in League Two and Conference sides and for part-time Ayr United, before a move to Crewe eventually allowed him first-team appearances in League One.
