Tate began his career at Manchester United, but struggled to break into the first team and went on loan to United`s Belgian feeder club, Royal Antwerp, and then Swansea, before joining the Welsh side permanently in 2004. He captained Swansea for much of the 2009–10 season as a result of regular captain Garry Monk`s frequent injuries and suspensions.
