The Albert Einstein Society was founded on 28 June 1977 by Dr Max Fluckiger. It is located in Bern, Switzerland and is most noted for awarding the Einstein Medal. This medal is awarded to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to science that is related to the work of Albert Einstein. Kip Stephen Thorne (born June 1, 1940) is an American theoretical physicist, known for his prolific contributions in gravitation physics and astrophysics and for having trained a generation of scientists. A longtime friend and colleague of Stephen Hawking and Carl Sagan, he was the Feynman Professor of Theoretical Physics at Caltech until 2009 and one of the world’s leading experts on the astrophysical implications of Einstein’s general theory of relativity. He continues scientific research in addition to writing a film.
