Albert Salmi, Sohn der finnischen Einwanderer Svante und Ida Salmi, wuchs in einer Gemeinde auf, in der uberwiegend Finnisch gesprochen wurde. Als Erstklassler konnte er darum nur wenig Englisch und hatte so einige Defizite nachzuholen. Dennoch schloss er das College ab und diente danach rund drei Jahre lang als Soldat im Zweiten Weltkrieg.
