Many of the houses that have been standing there for decades are in the brink of being demolished and the change in lifestyle are only two of the effects of what is planned to be done for the city. Neong, the protagonist of the novel, suggested the women in their area to befriend the engineers assigned to put up railroads in their place and try to persuade them to not push through with their project. Angel, a supervisor at the modernization project fell in love with Aning, who happens to be the same object of affection as Neong. The plan to put up railroads in Kabulusan succeeded and some of the townfolks were even persuaded to work for the company managing the construction of the railroads. Because of this, the bond of the community which used to be strong turned otherwise. An accident happened one day where one of the residents was killed by a train. Neong was held responsible for what happened even if he was innocent. Because of this, he began to doubt himself and other people and thought of Aning`s possibility of marrying Angel and eventually leads to his insanity. At the end of the story, the culprit wil be revealed and Neong is proved innocent and later on recovers. Meanwhile, Aning will refuse to marry Angel and will enter the convent."
