Alfaroa costaricensis, also known as campano chile, chiciscua, gaulin, gavilan colorado, or gavilancillo, is a slow growing, nut bearing timber tree with pink heartwood which grows in temperate woodlands in the central region of Columbia. A. costaricensis can reach 27 m in height and 60 cm diameter at breast height. A. costaricensis normally grows in cloudy areas on well-drained soils with slopes of 5% or more at elevations between 0.6 and 2.2 km which receive 1.5-2.5 m of precipitation and sustain temperatures of 15 to 20 degrees C. This tree does not grow well in the shade.
