It is a perennial of the Amaryllis family that occurs widely in mountainous or northerly regions across Europe and Asia. The subspecies platyphyllum occurs widely in meadows and woodlands across the Amur river system in China and Russia, extending its range into Japan, where it is an important cultural food source of the Ainu people.
