The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine A4M is a United States registered 501c nonprofit organization that promotes what it calls "anti-aging medicine." The A4M was founded in 1993 by Robert Goldman and Ronald Klatz, who were trained as osteopathic physicians. The Academy's activities include lobbying, education and public relations, they also sponsor several conferences, such as the Annual World Congress on Anti-Aging Medicine. The Academy state on their website that they have over 20,000 members worldwide. The field of anti-aging medicine is not recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties, the American Osteopathic Association Bureau of Osteopathic Specialists, or the American Medical Association. The activities of the A4M are controversial: in 2003 a commentary on the response of the scientific community to the promotion of anti-aging medicine noted that the activities of the A4M were seen as a threat to the credibility of serious scientific research on aging. The A4M has responded to such criticism by describing it as censorship perpetrated by a conspiracy of the US Food and Drug Administration and others, motivated by competing commercial interests.
