Integration of refugees and immigrants is a widely contested concept in the literature of international migration. This book is bringing a new element in the analysis of refugees’ integration: work in trade. The present book uses the case of the Romanian refugees settled in Denmark to examine integration. This work brings a critique to the Danish “any job” integration policy which ranks refugees in inferior positions in the society without taking into consideration the human capital they bring along in the destination country. The Danish state’s expectations that refugees should enroll in “any job”, irrespective of their previous education, only takes into consideration and advocates for the shift from welfare to self-maintenance without looking at the refugees’ self-accomplishment in the destination country. From a top-down perspective, a successful economical integration in jobs that are equivalent to the refugees’ education (work in trade) is the one which will create the positive attitude towards a progress in cultural, social, and political integration. These are three dimensions of integration that presuppose and give meaning to each other.
