Wide band gap semiconductor Zinc Oxide is of significant interest for use in blue LED’s, short wavelength laser diodes, high temperature and power devices, and transparent conductive oxides. Polar c-axis oriented Zinc Oxide and its alloy Magnesium Zinc Oxide based heterostructures and quantum wells have been developed. These heterostructures and quantum wells however suffer from limited quantum efficiency due piezoelectric and spontaneous polarization fields. The use of non-polar a-axis and m-axis oriented films has thus gained importance for development of high quantum efficiency structures. The non-polar films however possess in-plane structural, optical, electrical and acoustic anisotropic properties. Though some of these properties maybe advantageous for development of novel electronic, optical and acoustic devices, others might be detrimental to development of non-polar heterostructures and quantum wells. Currently, only limited information is available of study and control of these anisotropic properties. This book presents MOCVD growth optimization and comprehensive characterizations of anisotropic properties of a-plane Zinc Oxide and Magnesium Zinc Oxide thin films.
