The u02bbApapane is a species of finch in the Hawaiian honeycreeper subfamily, Drepanidinae, that is endemic to Hawaii. The bright crimson feathers of the u02bbApapane were once used to adorn the u02bbahuu02bbula, mahiole, and nu0101 lei hulu of aliu02bbi. u02bbApapane form small flocks when foraging through the canopies of u02bbu014dhiu02bba lehua trees, drinking nectar from the flowers and simultaneously pollinating them. They never forage on the forest floor. When flowering of u02bbu014dhiu02bba is low and if not part of a flock, u02bbApapane will be chased away from flowers by more aggressive competing birds such as the u02bbu0100kohekohe and u02bbiu02bbiwi.
