It is wide spread through the woodlands of Japan and is one of the most curious-flowered arisaemas. This variety represent the most southerly population of A. thunbergbii. The plant has a purple bract (modified leaf) extending to 30–45 cm height before it bends down to the ground. It produces a large number of offshoots from the mother bulb on the yearly basis. The offshoots inhibit the growth and thus are often removed.
