Arto Records was owned by the Arto Company of Orange, New Jersey which in turn was owned by the Standard Music Roll Company, a business which made player piano rolls. They went into the gramophone record business in summer of 1920. Their recording studio was located in Manhattan, New York City. Arto issued a Black Label series of popular music, numbered 9xxx, including such artists as the California Ramblers, Lucille Hegamin, the Original Memphis Five and Vernon Dalhart. The label also issued a Red Label series of classical and ethnic music, numbered 3xxx, that included the Peerless Quartet and Fred Van Eps.
