It is produced by Asterisk I.T., Australia, who also supply and support Asterisk PBX and compatible hardware. An existing Asterisk PBX installation is a prerequisite, so AsterFax is almost always used alongside Asterisk. Its primary end-user interface is e-mail; messages are turned into faxes and vice-versa. Unlike most open-source software, AsterFax is not always free of charge; a commercial licence must be purchased for an installation which handles more than one fax line.
