High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Astraeaceae are a family of fungi in the order Boletales. A monotypic family, it contains the single genus Astraeus that contains a number of earthstar mushrooms. They are distinguished by the outer layer of flesh (exoperidium) that at maturity splits open in a star-shape manner to reveal a round spore sac. Additionally, they have a strongly hygroscopic character—they become soft in moist air, and hard in dry air. Species in this family have a cosmopolitan distribution, and grow on the ground in ectomycorrhizal associations with trees and shrubs.
