They are found from near sea level to depths of 300 metres (980 ft) in the Atlantic Ocean off south-eastern South America. These skates are all considered threatened due to the intense fishing pressure within their range. Skates are cartilaginous fish belonging to the family Rajidae in the superorder Batoidea of rays. There are more than 200 described species in 27 genera. There are two subfamilies, Rajinae (hardnose skates) and Arhynchobatinae (softnose skates).
