High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! BESYS (Bell Operating System) was an early time-sharing operating system created in 1957 by Bell Labs to suit their own needs. It was used to efficiently deal with a large number of dynamically loaded short jobs using punched cards. BESYS was never released by Bell Labs as a final product. Although it was used through many departments of the company, there was never an adequate technical support for it. They also made it available to others without charge or formal technical support. BESYS was based on computers IBM 7090 and IBM 7094, which had attached additional equipment to speed up processing of punched cards (via computer IBM 1401) and print the results on paper. As the head of the BESYS development project was appointed Victor A. Vyssotsky. Materials and experience from this project were later used as a starting point for Multics development in 1960s, when Bell Labs started to need a more advanced operating system.
