He served as the head football coach at Western Reserve University (1935–1940), Vanderbilt University (1949–1952), and Wittenberg University (1955–1968), compiling a career college football record of 168–45–8. Edwards also coached the Detroit Lions of the National Football League from 1941 to 1942, tallying a mark of 4–9–1. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 1986. Steve Belichick, father of Bill Belichick, played for him at Western Reserve and with the Lions, and coached with him at Vanderbilt. Edwards was the godfather of Bill.
