Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. A Black Loyalist was an inhabitant of British America of African descent who joined the British forces during the American Revolutionary War. Many had been enslaved and decided to fight on the side of the British in return for promises of freedom from enslavement. Some 3,000 Black Loyalists were evacuated from New York to Nova Scotia; they were individually listed in the Book of Negroes as the British arranged for transport. United Empire Loyalists who migrated to Nova Scotia brought another 2500 enslaved Africans with them. These were not regarded as Loyalists, since they had no choice in their fates.
