In 1959, while Dr. Blanco was a professor of Astrophysics at the Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland, Ohio, he discovered an open cluster in the Milky Way. Blanco 1 is included in the list of open clusters of the Milky Way galaxy. Its location in equatorial coordinates for the year 2000 is right ascension 00h 04.3m declination -29° 56u2032 in the constellation Sculptor. As an open cluster, Blanco 1 exhibits subsolar ratios that are not observed among nearby field stars. It is one of the few open clusters at a large distance from the galactic plane. The age of the cluster may range from 30 to 90 Myrs.
