It inhabits dry, coastal mesic and mixed mesic forests at elevations of 250–580 metres (820–1,900 ft) on the islands of Hawai‘i and Maui. It is threatened by habitat loss. Rubiaceae is a family of flowering plants, variously called the madder family, bedstraw family or coffee family.
