He died at 28 from a heroin overdose shortly before the release of Sublime's self-titled major label debut. Bradley Nowell was born in Long Beach, California to Jim and Nancy Nowell. His parents divorced when he was ten; he lived with his mother for four years. In 1981, 13-year-old Bradley moved in with his father. Music was an integral part of Nowell's upbringing. Nowell's father, Jim Nowell, was a big fan of Jimmy Buffett and encouraged Bradley to learn guitar.
