Other members of the Cyperaceae family are also called sedges, however those of genus Carex may be called "true" sedges, and it is the most species-rich genus in the family. The study of Carex is known as caricology. The term "caricology" derives from Latin: "caricologia." The eminent botanist Carl Ludwig Willdenow published the 107-page book " Caricologia, sive descriptiones omnium specierum caricis, in usum excursionum botanicarum pro amicis seorsim impressa... " in 1805.
