The twenty-seventh series of Casualty began airing on BBC One and BBC HD on 18 August 2012 with a special episode centering around a disaster at a music festival. Filming ended on series 26 in April 2012 and series 27 began filming a week later. Producer Nikki Wilson told Digital Spy that the first episode will not be feature length, as Casualty seems to tell the story better in normal format 50-minute episodes. The series will run for 44 episodes, increasing from 42 in the last series. The first episode which aired between 9.10pm and 10.00pm brought in 5.19 viewers, remaining one of the most watched viewings of the night. The series took a Christmas break on 15th December and is due to return on 5th January 2013.
