It is defined in RFC 5272, its transport mechanisms in RFC 5273. It is one of two protocols utilizing the Certificate Request Message Format (CRMF), described in RFC 4211, with the other protocol being the Certificate Management Protocol (CMP). The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) develops and promotes Internet standards, cooperating closely with the W3C and ISO/IEC standards bodies and dealing in particular with standards of the TCP/IP and Internet protocol suite. It is an open standards organization, with no formal membership or membership requirements.
