High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Clitheroe Castle in Clitheroe, Lancashire, England is a Norman Motte-and-bailey castle built in a natural carboniferous limestone outcrop, grid reference SD742416. It was anciently the seat of the Lords of Bowland. The castle, formerly a possession of the de Lacy family of Pontefract, passed to the House of Lancaster in 1311, and thence to the Crown in 1399. It is stated by some that Robert II de Lacy built Clitheroe Castle around 1186 as the administrative centre of his vast estates. However Robert had not inherited his estates from his elder brother as early as 1186, and the Norman Clitheroe Castle is acknowledged by a number of sources to have been constructed during the late 11th to early 12th Century, and maybe to have been in existence by 1086.
